Hey everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to address a very important and complex topic: depression. I recently received a heartfelt comment asking for advice on overcoming depression, and I felt compelled to share my thoughts with you all.

Depression is a unique and deeply personal experience for each person. What works for one person might not work for another. For me to offer specific advice tailored to your individual needs would require spending time with you, getting to know your life story, and understanding your specific struggles. General tips can sometimes help, but they often miss the mark when it comes to addressing the core issues at play.

There are often unmet needs, regrets, guilt, shame, or other burdens weighing heavily on us, and it takes time and careful listening to identify these. You might not even fully understand what’s at the root of your depression, which is why talking to a trusted counselor or someone in your church can be so beneficial. Hearing yourself speak and sharing your story can help reveal what you truly need.

Importantly, this process requires God’s presence. Only He knows what you really need, and you can ask Him to bring this to your awareness. It might involve repenting, confessing burdens, accepting Christ’s forgiveness, and understanding that you are not alone. Maybe there’s something that happened to you that you need to process and let go of, or perhaps there’s deep-seated anger that needs to be addressed.

Depression can also have biological, hormonal, dietary, or medication-related causes. It might even be a form of spiritual oppression. If you’ve given your life to Jesus, it’s not possession but could be oppression, with the enemy using insecurities or past traumas against you. Speaking to someone and sharing your burden can help you close these doors to the enemy.

If what you’ve tried has only made things worse, maybe you haven’t taken enough time to truly understand your depression. It’s crucial to first answer the question of why you’re feeling this way. Without understanding the root cause, you can’t find the right remedy. Trying to fix your depression without this understanding can feel like self-betrayal, as if you’re not giving yourself the attention you need. We actually have a helpful worksheet on our website, called "Self-Awareness". This will assist you in the journey of self-discovery, and we would appreciate you supporting our ministry!

Remember, you can’t heal in isolation. Fellowship and the support of the body of Christ are vital. We must confess our weaknesses and allow others to help us. These points are not attacks on anyone but examples of how complex and vast depression can be.

From my experience as a registered counselor, these are some core reasons clients have identified for their depression. My advice is to reach out to a Christian counselor you trust. It could be a combination of biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors, and it takes time to heal. Give yourself grace, lean on Jesus, and seek support.

If you need additional support, please feel free to comment or email us at info@christianonacouch.com. God bless you, and please keep us updated on your progress. You are not alone.

Blessings,
Barry
